Phoenix highlights 2005-2006

During these first 2 years of PHOENIX existence, we selected a few important events as milestones in our activity:

•In terms of internal organization and dissemination: (a) the website was implemented; (b) a leaflet was produced; (c) the size of our network increased from 12 to 18 members, with 6 new additions from Spain and Italy.

•Knowledge transfer was one main activity during these first 2 years. Some events included: (a) the organization 2 advanced courses on post-fire management (Lisbon, November 2005 and 2006) in order to train new researchers, including BCs, MSc, PhD and post-doctoral researchers and for mid-career training of forestry professionals; (b) the seminar on post-fire assessment, monitoring and management, with special emphasis on economical evaluation of fire damages, in Firenze (Italy); (c) the organization of 4 training courses on prescribed burning, in Portugal; (d) A workshop on restoration of cork oak forests after fire was organized by IPROCOR in November 2006 (Mérida).

•Thirteen research projects have been carried out by PHOENIX partners. Major projects recently finished include EUFIRELAB and RECOFORME, with several outputs on fire impacts on forests and post-fire management. Highlights of recently started projects include FIRE PARADOX, coordinated by ISA, ALARM (on large scale environmental risks), coordinated by the partner UCLM (Spain), and SUBERNOVA, and important project on cork oak forest restoration after fire coordinated by the partner IPROCOR (Spain).

•Scientific activity was maintained at high level, as shown by ca. 20 presentations from Phoenix partners at the V International Conference on Forest Fire Research (November 2006, Portugal).
